This illustration was one of the many that was commissioned by Aparna Jain for her book, Like a Girl, published by Westland Books. I decided to illustrate Savitribai Phule, a historical figure in anti-caste movement and female literacy. The idea behind Savitribai Phule's portrait was simple yet an attempt at doing justice to her context in the most accessible manner, since the book is targeted towards younf readers. The work is done digitally, with textured brushes to add a sense of tactility. The colours were kept bright, the sky indicative of dawn, the clouds with a silver linings.
