Fall 2018- HEARTS - Service Learning Project (Printmaking)
To fully explain what HEARTS is it is; Hypertension Education And Resourcing Talented Students. We worked with a current professor Barbara Engebretsen, who travels to Nepal and Ethiopia, to help and run this organization train high school students to do heart scans and checks. She came to our class and asked for us to design and print t-shirts so the specific students trained in such regards would be recognized.
Barb gave us a lot of information and background stories to the HEARTS group. From the people she met, the sights she's seen, and the variations of colors that the native people wear.
For the first portion we just did simple sketches to get some ideas flowing, with having a front and back design.
After all the sketches we voted on the best 3 for front and back, then had another day of sketching based off of the 3 chosen of each. It then came down to 1 for each and then I recommended having designs on the sleeves and everyone was all for it.
When we selected the few, my sketch was chosen for the back and since I had the idea for the sleeves as well I also got that chosen. So I was the lead designer for the Back and Sleeve portion.
But it wasn't all my doing, I continued to do updates and adjustments to the design. When I thought I had the back complete we photocopied it and distributed it among-st the class for everyone to own touch for shading and texture.
Once that was completed we finished all the designs, leading to these to for the back and sleeves.
Once everyone was full on board with the final designs, we started printing them to the shirts, roughly 115 shirts, we finished them in 2 class periods and celebrated at the end with Barb with photos with the shirts and authentic Nepal coffee in Nepal.
Overall this project was really important due to group of individuals that we were making these for and the organization. Being able to help the community and get your work out there is probably the best thing for a graphic designer.
