From the shot to the projection, it's all about light. The light gives the image.
German expressionnism is one of the first cinematic movement, born in the 20's, between two war. Light pioneer had a very particular and meticulus aesthetic, that inspired more than one movie maker. In this mute movies all the feeling where overdone : make-up, body, painting set, architectures, shadows. oppressive perspective...To give the emotion to the viewer:
"the world is right in front of us, why reproduce truth?"
"Expressionnism is a conception of the world"
Everything is done so it could be interpretate, to put the viewer into a unreel situation, where the threat is constant for a society in crises.
The viewer become witness.
In this work, I tried to use german expressionnist's codes, and applicate them to the silhouette.
BODY & CLAIR-OBSCUR
-make up is a mask, the body is paint,
-broke the classical idea of beauty, but keaping expressionnist aesthetic,
-create agressive and menacing distortions by optical illusion and special material,
LIGHT SPREADING & DISTORTED PERSPECTIVES
-white pigment cloud escaping from the clothes
-the light comes from the white skin,
-costume become architectural,
-create shadow by projections and piece of fabrics,
-use translucence by different fabrics, material, superposition
