History of Typography — Clarendon

History of Typography

We were tasked with creating a poster based on a typeface that we picked at random. I pulled Clarendon out of the pool, and immediately started researching its history. While we sketched out ideas, our teacher gave us four designers' names, and then told us to create talks and their descriptions. The full idea of the poster then came to fruition, it was for a fictional event at the Design Museum in London.
I decided to model the poster after the woodblock type of the 1860's when the typeface was created. I was originally influenced by the punctuation of posters of the time, especially the question and exclamation mark. I expanded upon the exclamation point, and it became a modular grid.
