This brief dealt with a social issue which is prevalent within the South African community. A poster had to be created to raise awareness about the social issue. The social issue which has been depicted in the illustrated poster is sexual assault as we as a country have one of the highest rape rates in the world.
The concept behind the social awareness poster is ‘rebirth’. A butterfly represents a transformation within one’s personality or a rebirth. A surrealistic approach was taken by incorporating the actual wings into the work, the reason as to why the wings are broken is because the woman in the image has just been assaulted by the figure who is running away in the
background. The idea is that through getting the correct help and guidance, through counselling her ‘broken wings’ can be healed.
