CUPB TV Title Card Parodies

At Cornell University, I am a member of the Cornell University Program Board (the organization that brings speakers and comedians to the Cornell community), and was the chairperson of the group during 2013. Since my role that year involved creating slideshows for our weekly meetings, I thought that I'd try to liven things up by making our title slide an homage to a different tv show every week, as many of the people we bring come from the entertainment world. Each week has a different image created in Photoshop.
January 23, 2013: Downton Abbey
Week one was Downton Abbey, as we had come back from winter break, during which Downton's Christmas episode aired. I replaced the image of Downton Abbey with Uris Library and the Clocktower, and used Bernhard Modern font.
January 30, 2013: 30 Rock
Besides the date being January 30 (allowing us to make use of the number 30), the series finale of 30 Rock aired the following day, so we paid a short tribute to the show. The image of the clocktower is supposed to be analagous to the image of 30 Rockefeller Center right before the title card shows, while the actual text is based off of the 30 Rock title card.
February 6, 2013: Community
With the return of Community scheduled for February 7, for the February 6th meeting we decided to have a title themed to the show. I decided to include both the pen and paper version of the title card (above) as shown in the show's opening credits, and the college-athletic inspired font that the show uses on its DVD sets. The pen and paper version was taken from a screenshot, and I did some cutting and pasting of the existing letters to create the "p" and "b" in Photoshop.
February 13, 2013
As the State of the Union was on February 12, it seemed fitting to do a patriotic theme - and what show's title card was more Americana than The West Wing? Originally, I was going to edit the actual title card, but I figured it'd be easier to overlay some flag images to re-create the title card myself. Instead of the White House being the image in the background, I decided to use our meeting building, Willard Straight Hall.
February 20, 2013
Time to go across the pond and emulate Doctor Who! The top half shows the logo from the 9th-10th doctors, and the bottom half emulates the 11th doctor's logo. I was a bit pressed for time on this one, and if I had more time, I'd fill in the background of both the top and bottom half with something a little more complex than the simple texture and gradient, but I think it worked well enough to convey the tv show given the time I had to make these.
February 27, 2013
Re-creating Friends was pretty simple, I just had to find a similar font. The harder part was trying to find a background image - I didn't have a good night image of Cornell University, and even looking through the series of Cornell stock photos, I didn't find something I loved, but I thought that this image would work well enough.
March 13, 2013: Whose Line is it Anyway?
It was around this time that the CW announced they were bringing back the improv classic Whose Line Is It Anyway? In honor of that I tried recreating the Drew Carey version of the titles. Not the closest match, but it uses the same font, and takes a stock photo of Bailey Hall as the theater background - ideally, the photo would've been from a different angle with a full audience.
April 3, 2013: Game of Thrones
While the text says "Spring is Coming," April in Ithaca can still feel quite like winter!
April 10, 2013: Mad Men
Who's the sillhouette in this title card? Why, it's Joel McHale, who we brought to Cornell to do a comedy show in April 2013.
April 17, 2013: Parks & Recreation
NBC's comedies are popular among our group members, including Parks and Recreation
April 24, 2013: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Many of our group members enjoy watching The Daily Show, so we made our version of the show's title card! Jon Stewart himself came to Cornell to perform standup in 2011. This one took a little more work than some of the other title cards, but it was worth it for one of our last meetings.
May 1, 2013: The Office
The Office was finishing its final season. Like the show's title card, I took our sign from our office cubicle which reads "Cornell University Program Board" and added the word "The." While it's alright in a picture, I think it works better in video form.
September 4, 2013: Breaking Bad
The first title card of the 2013-2014 school year was Breaking Bad, as the show was just beginning its final season. Like the Downton Abbey one, this had been in my mind since 2012, but I didn't actually try making it for a while.
September 18, 2013: Portlandia
After drawing a blank on ideas, I had a request by a fellow executive board member to do Portlandia, which I created. It was fun using some brush textures on the background, and I replaced the bird with the Cornell Athletics Big Red Bear.
September 25, 2013: Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Trying to emulate the opening credits of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, I used a stock photo of Statler Hall on Cornell's campus at dusk, which was already slightly blurred. I added some more blur and added a green filter to make it better match the credits.
October 2, 2013: Sesame Street
On a week when I was out of ideas and short on time, I turned to my executive board and got Sesame Street as a suggestions. While I had intended to make muppet versions of executive board members to surround the sign, didn't have a chance to do so, and ended up using the regular Sesame Street characters instead.
Octboer 9, 2013: Saturday Night Live
Saturday Night Live is a perennial favorite of the group, and many people CUPB have brought to perform at Cornell in the last few years have come from SNL. I copied the look of the title cards (and its use of Gotham font), using one of my own images of Cornell at night (rather than New York City).
October 23, 2013: Law & Order
Not one of the most difficult ones to do, but this was another week when I was short on time. Looking back on it, it might have been more fun to not be a Law & Order "spin-off" but rather write out "Cornell University" in blue and "Program Board" in red.
November 6, 2013: Scandal
Around this time, we decided to help co-sponsor another organization to bring actor Joshua Malina to Cornell, of The West Wing, and more recently, Scandal fame. I created a title card of Scandal using photos from CUPB from the last few years.
November 13, 2013: Sherlock
Another title card suggested by an executive board member. I found a great image of Cornell University to use in place of London, and did a little work to make it tinted correctly and create a miniaturization effect.
November 20, 2013: The Colbert Report
Ever since doing The Daily Show, I also wanted to do although I felt it would be more challenging to do with 3-dimensional text, displayed at various angles. Though for the last meeting of my tenure I figured I would try it - while I would have liked to spend some more time on the gradient of texture of the text, I think it came out pretty well.
