1971 Fruit Bowl- Competition UAE
We started this project thinking about the beliefs of the late, great, Sheikh Zayed and the nation of the United Arab Emirates, looking for inspiration from the land, it’s culture, it’s history and it’s leadership.  We felt drawn to the concept of Unity, and the unique story of how the UAE came to be founded. Our piece, pays respects to this history, at the same time,  embodies the values of unity and generosity.

Our designed piece is a Fruit Bowl, named after the year of the founding of the UAE.  The symbolism of the humble fruit bowl speaks of generosity in its function of offering to others, but also acts as a vessel that holds the fruit which symbolises fertility, growth, wealth and prosperity.
Starting with this, we wove in cultural and symbolic references. The fruit bowl base patterning is an extrapolation from the cultural weaving folk arts of the Emirati people.

Additionally, the fruit bowl base is comprised of 7 bands of pattern, signifying the 7 Emirates coming together to form the Union of the UAE.  The perimeter of the bowl is comprised of multiple fins, connected to the base to support the walls of the Fruit bowl. These fins mirror the strength of the people.
