THE CHALLENGE

To create a Trading Card Game with Marvel licensing. The game would have a complex mechanic, and should support at least two expansions of cards per year. The main goal was to create the biggest Trading Card Game ever made in Brazil.

MY ROLE

I was the lead Designer working with a Product Design Team and a PM. I worked on game mechanics, product design, packages, sketches, logo design, and graphic design for the entire project.

DESIGN TOOLS

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

SPECIFIC ISSUES

Never there was a project so complex made for a Brazilian Trading Card Game. Besides being the first of a kind, it would be made with one of the biggest content licensors in the World: Marvel Studios. Both TCG and Marvel fans are very demanding as to the final quality of the products, so we had a double challenge here. Every component of the game was created following Marvel’s look and feel illustrations. Each type of card has its own layout, and respects its own needs for the game (for example, Ability cards have their texts on the bottom, so they can be piled up).
FOUR TYPES OF CARDS: CHARACTER, SUPPORT, SCENARIO AND ABILITY
DESIGN PROCESS

First thing, we’ve hired a Game Designer to create the game mechanics. With the first sketches, I’ve managed to create the components and cards layouts. From the first layout to the last, I’ve had made more than 50 different options. I’ve also created the packaging design, expansion logos, components, playmats, and all POS materials. I’ve submitted and approved every layout with Marvel’s branding team.

THE RESULTS

The game was a hit. From its first collection, launched in the beginning of 2013, we’ve made more than 10 expansions, being the last one launched in the end of 2017. More than 1000 unique cards were created, and more than 3000 players were active on the event organizing system. It was elected Game of the Year in 2013 by Ludo Awards. Since it was discontinued, people still creates fan made cards for the game.
