Tarangini
A Performing Arts and Visual Arts Centre
This project aims at making culture available to the public by bringing it out of closed buildings, both figuratively as well as literally. This Centre has been designed to accommodate the evolution of culture in the city. It is meant to be a space for people who want to experience and showcase art & culture but have not had an opportunity to do so in the past. This space aims to cater to the newer generation of artists and performers who choose to move towards more experimental forms of expressionThe thought process behind this design has been to create a space that is inviting and is not intimidating to the common man, in an effort to break the notion of exclusivity associated with culture and cultural activities.
Location: Shahpur Jat, New Delhi
Zoning Plan
Layout Plan
The site has been divided into 5 zones on the basis of their functions. The function of each zone is based on the existing conditions of the site and the functional as well as the area requirements of the elements placed in these zones. Each Zone has its once entrance, allowing for easy circulation and way finding.
Process Layout : Function based Zoning
Zone 1: Private Zone
This Zone has been categorized as a Private Zone as it is naturally secluded due to the heavy presence of trees in that part of the site. This zone has its own entry point which can be regulated, adding to the concept of privacy in a public space. The rehearsal spaces are located in this Zone.
Zone 2 : Secondary Activities Zone
This zone consists of two major elements, namely, the Cafe and the Amphitheater. While the cafe is likely to pull in a crowd other than art enthusiasts, the amphitheater is dedicated to showcasing performances in a very public setup. The location for the cafe as well as the amphitheater were chosen based on the site topography. While the cafe is located on the highest point of the site, the amphitheater is located at a point which is naturally low and valley-like.
Zone 3 : Visual Arts Zone
This Zone is equipped with two types of galleries and plenty of space for open display of installations and sculptures. While one type of gallery is a walk through gallery, the other type has a more closed setup. The space is further accentuated by landscape on both sides and serves as a separator between the Auditoriums and the Amphitheater.
Zone 4 : Performing Arts Zone
This space is equipped with two types of theaters and a common waiting area for the audience. While one theater is big enough to seat 160 people, the other theater has no stage and is a more intimate setup with a capacity of 100 people. This zone acts as a buffer between the existing park space and the rest of the site.
Zone 5 : Public Zone
This Zone is referred to as the Public Zone as most of this part of the site has retained its original function, i.e. serving as a park and play space.
Cafe : The cafe is located in the south-east part of the site, with a direct entry from the parking space. It is on the highest point of the site, complete with descended open seating overlooking the rest of the space.
Administration Office and Reception : The reception is located on the right side of the cafe, sharing a courtyard with it. It is located adjacent to the fort wall ruins and the structure and design of the reception aims to mimic a fort walkway.
Rehearsal Spaces : The rehearsal spaces are located in the private zone, in the southern corner of the site.
Galleries : Four gallery spaces have been provided on site. While two are closed galleries, the other two are open galleries. The galleries are situated next to each other, sharing a common courtyard which is also meant to be used for open display of installations.
Auditoriums : Two types of auditoriums have been provided on site. One is a Proscenium Auditorium (seating capacity of 160) with a backstage, green room and a waiting area/ foyer space. The other is a more intimate space accommodating 100 people, with its stage in the center and step seating all around.
