A competitive analysis is necessary for not only understanding industry convention, but how to stand apart. Sketching helps to quickly flesh features out.
WIREFRAMING
This stage is important for approvals and to help devs get a sense of which features are needed even before styling happens.
USER FRIENDLY INTERFACE
Taking a user centered approach means not recreating the wheel. If a convention has been set and accepted, it should be implemented as such and only changed if it enhances the UI's ease of use.
