Dresses are graphic, sculptural and animated. I chose Rooney Mara’s gown from the 2012 Oscar’s to design a set of fonts. Based on the attitude, theme, construction, and material of her gown, I created a number of variations. Then, I used FontStruct to create this font system, which enables this typeface to be publically downloaded and used.
The most interesting part of this dress is the contrast between front and back. The front seems so elegant but a little bit loose, whilst the back is more structured and powerful. Base on three crossed lines of the back, the font is bolder and abstracted than the former.
The inspiration of this direction is from the detailed chest design. Based on the design, I “fold” the type. The original type I chose is slim, pure, and fashionable, that fits the feeling of the dress.
Not merely the haut couture, I was attracted to her whole look: black bangs, red lips and elegant dress. I wanted to make all of these beautiful things appear in the font design. Each letter is very static, just standing there silent but beautiful.
