Target Test Prep Study Plan UI Design

Target Test Prep

I began working with Target Test Prep in 2016. Target Test Prep is a comprehensive online GMAT and GRE test prep platform for users looking to get their MBA. One of my major projects with TTP was to redesign the Study Plan, a primary page within the web app, and to evaluate its hierarchy within the app’s architecture. TTP’s COO had conducted informal user interviews during one-on-one tutoring sessions and discovered most students didn’t know about the Study Plan, or didn’t know how to access it. At the time, the Study Plan was buried within the app’s navigation, and the app didn’t direct users back to the Study Plan once they navigated away from it to complete tasks

Our goal was to make the Study Plan more of a hub for students and more prominent within the app’s navigation so students could easily find their way back to it. The TTP team also wanted to include new features within the Study Plan and evaluate the visual UI design in the next iterations.

We began by moving the Study Plan out from under other pages and placed it directly in the top navigation. We also began adding components within the rest of the app that directed students back to the Study Plan after they completed tasks. Based on follow-up informal user interviews (i.e., tutoring sessions), this increased awareness and clarity of the Study Plan’s purpose and the students’ ability to find and use it.

Over the next several months, we made several iterations to the Study Plan’s visual UI design. During the redesign, I focused on reinforcing TTP’s brand within the page, and at the same time, I started to develop UI patterns that would eventually apply to the rest of the app. My goals with this visual redesign were to create a consistent experience across the app and to make development more efficient by establishing styles and starting to build a UI component library.

After the bulk of the project was complete, we reviewed analytics and found that we increased Study Plan engagement by 15% on desktop and 1.2% on mobile. The COO’s tutoring sessions with students also became more productive and students commented positively on the updated design.
