EN — The sadness of Belgium (Hugo Claus). One of the greatest Belgian classics that we had to give a new contemporary look to. The story is told from the point of view of a Flemish boy, called Louis, at boarding school during World War II. The story is full of lies and deceit, but it also bears the importance of Christianity in this spirit of the time.
For the design I have made links with Christianity, the character Louis and WWII. For the cover I designed a stained-glass window, in which Louis plays the leading role. He is depicted as a puppet because he is dragged along in different situations without knowing the consequences. The typography resembles the propaganda posters during the Second World War. The open spine reflects the vulnerability of this theme.
NL — Het verdriet van België (Hugo Claus). Eén van de grootste Belgische klassiekers die wij in een nieuw hedendaags jasje moesten steken. Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit de visie van een Vlaamse jongen, genaamd Louis, op internaat tijdens WOII. Het verhaal draagt veel leugens en bedrog met zich mee, maar evengoed het belang van het katholiek geloof in deze tijdsgeest.
Voor de vormgeving heb ik linken gelegd met het christendom, het personage en WOII. Voor de cover heb ik een glasraam ontworpen, waarin Louis de hoofdrol speelt. Hij is als een marionet afgebeeld omdat hij in verschillende situaties wordt meegesleept zonder de gevolgen ervan te kennen. De typografie heeft weg van de propagandaposters tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De open rug geeft de kwetsbaarheid van dit thema weer.
