Working from observation on site allows me to capture impressions, taking cues from the dominant colors, movement and structure of the elements. Watercolor painting at the shore inspires me to capture the movement of waves. During an incredible painting frenzy on Monhegan Island, I worked at the edge of the rocky Maine coast as a hurricane was passing. I painted in the rain, wind and spray of the surf and the resulting works embody all the excitement of that natural fury.
As a passenger in a car or train, I focus on unfolding views of the land. I am intrigued by moving subject matter and challenged by recording a glimpse of an image passing by. The loss of control and the limits on memory allow for a liberated painting experience and intensify quick reaction to what I am observing.
Color has a spontaneous existence using watercolor as a medium. In the time between the first touch of brush on wet paper to the final dried surface, unexpected textures and edges appear, enhancing the subject matter with effects that deeply satisfy.
