Poets Never Prosper | Short Films

Short Films as PoetsNeverProsper
PoetsNeverProsper began in 2016 as a group of friends at high school with an amateur interest in film. As a team we created a few short films for various competitions. My role was Editor, Sound Design, and figuring out what basic effects I could pull from my hat, despite having no training at the time, working entirely from what I could teach myself with Final Cut Pro X.
An Outsider's Perspective | From Three Minutes to Five
For the Rode Reel Film Competition
Our team leader found this competition 2 weeks before it closed, and pitched her idea for it over a single lunch break, asking if we could take part. We wrote and filmed what we could around school hours, leaving me with a few sleepless nights as the editor, but it came together in the end. For the fun of the challenge, we decided to enter the "Non-English Speaking" category, having our script translated into New Zealand sign language by a teacher, who then taught it back to us. Our main issue was cutting down our idea from the almost 6 minutes it was originally took shape as, to the 3 minute limit the competition called for. That, and doing it all in a week and a half.
My "Editors Cut", a few months later
Originally, we made An Outsider's Perspective for the competition, but soon we realised that we could actually get school credits for multiple subjects with it — an unintended but welcome benefit — so I came back to it and added in all the parts we had sadly had to cut for time in our original entry, plus some extra bits and pieces I wasn't able to complete in the original time frame.
HP48 Hours Entries
Hanging by a Thread | 2016
This was the first year we ever entered the 48 Hours Film Festival. As a group of friends in year 13 with an interest in film-making, we decided it was finally time to give it a go. The whole process was very new to us, and although we tried to, we didn't make it in on time with this one!
Guess Who's Back | 2017
For the 48 Hours Film Festival in 2017, we had all graduated from high school and were scattered to the wind. Our base of operations remained Christchurch with 2 of us, but this time we were also spread to Wellington and Palmerston North in New Zealand, Los Angeles in America, and Jersey in the Channel Islands. Ultimately, we didn't like this one as much as last year's entry, but we got this one in on time, and for a team as scattered as we were, we took that as a win!
