The outdoor unit of air conditioner harmonized with space

Chimney is a new home outdoor unit with improved appearance which fits better with its surrounding environment for aesthetic enhancement. Also, the cooling efficiency has been improved by altered heat discharge methods.

Chimney는 집의 외부와 잘 어우러지지 않는 가정용 실외기의 외관을 개선해 심미성을 높이고, 열배출 방식을 개선하여 효율을 높인 실외기이다.

Unattractive outdoor unit

Beginning part

Sometimes when you walk the street, you can notice that many outdoor units of air conditioners

are not very attractive, for they tend not to fit in near beautiful buildings.
These are the analysis of installation states and usual shapes of the units which is seen around us.

못생긴 실외기

서두

거리를 걷다보면 잘 정돈된 건물들과 대조되는 매력적이지 않은 형태의 실외기들을 흔히 찾을 수 있다.
실외기들의 설치 실태를 확인하고, 그 대체적인 형태를 분석해보았다.

Why does the outdoor unit look like this?

Cause analysis

The outdoor unit is designed in a simple structure for optimized cooling efficiency of refrigerant.
Therefore, rectangular shape of today's units holds a large majority because of its advantage of

heat circulation and cheap cost.

However, not only the cooling efficiency based shapes of today ruins the beauty of building exterior,
but also causes inconvenience to pedestrians with its frontal exposed heat vent.

실외기는 왜 이렇게 생겼을까?

원인 분석

실외기는 냉매의 냉각에 최적화된 단순한 구조로 설계되어 있다.
때문에 냉각팬의 열기 순환에 유리하고 값 싼, 현재의 직육면체 형태가 압도적인 비율을 차지하고 있다.

그러나 냉각효율에 우선한 현재의 형태는 투박한 모습으로 인해 건물 외관의 미감을 해칠 뿐 아니라,
전방으로 노출된 열배출구로 인한 열풍으로 행인들에게 불편함을 주기도 한다.

Thinking in different points of view

African termites build enormous ventilation system in their habitats which naturally maintains the optimum temperature.
Applying this principle, a shopping center called <East Gate shopping center> in Zimbabwe, Africa developed a system that can keep the building's pleasant temperature with least electricity usage.

If we utilize the principle of vertical wind, we could design a new outdoor unit that fit in surrounding environment which breaks the conventional shape with huge frontal heat vent.

실외기의 냉각효율을 다른방식으로 유지할 순 없을까?

다르게 생각하기

아프리카에 서식하는 흰개미들은 서식지 내부에 그늘을 만들어 내부 공기를 대류시키는 방식으로 적절한 실내온도를 유지한다.
아프리카 짐바브웨의 백화점, <이스트 게이트 쇼핑센터>는 이를 응용해 건물 하단에 빈 공간을 만들어 공기를 식히고,

저전력 환풍시설을 이용, 공기를 순환시켜 아주 적은 전력으로도 쾌적한 실내온도를 유지하는 데 성공했다.
대기를 식혀줄 그늘과 이를 순환하는 구조를 디자인에 적용한다면, 전면부에 거대한 환풍구를 가진 획일적인 실외기의 형태에서 탈피할 수 있을 것이다.

Setting a design goal

Unlike air conditioner, outdoor unit is a product which is operated outside without direct user contact.
Because of that, the shape of it places more emphasis on harmony with surrounding environment rather than the user.
Also, to ensure the design improvements doesn't have negative effects on repair and cleaning issues,

the shape aims for a simple structure like the preexisted form.

실외기와 공간의 관계를 유지하다

디자인 목표 설정

실외기는 에어콘과 같은 가전제품과 달리 외부에서 직접적인 사용자 없이 작동하는 제품이다.
때문에 사용자인 사람 보다는 공간과의 조화를 중시해 디자인 할 수 있도록 하였으며,
디자인적 개선이 수리, 청소 등 유지보수에 부정적인 영향을 끼치지 않도록 기존과 같은 단순한 구조를 지향했다.

<Chimney> performs the similar role with outdoor unit of getting inside air out.
Also, chimney is a part of a building structure, which naturally goes together with near environment.
With this observation, the vertical chimney shape is applied to the unit shape.

구멍을 가리다, 기능을 유지하다

디자인 언어 정립

실내의 공기를 밖으로 빼내는 역할을 한다는 점에서 <굴뚝>은 실외기와 유사한 역할을 수행한다,
더불어 굴뚝은 건축물의 일부분이기에 형태적으로 더욱 자연스럽게 공간과 어우러진다.
이에 착안, 수직 굴뚝을 모티브로 한 조형을 적용하였다.
