Meditation Space: Mew Hall at Cornell University

This meditation space was designed and constructed by a collaborative studio class. The concept was based on the users emotional transition from the stressful world into a state of relaxation. This process would happen through the gradual progression of positive distractions. This space is currently installed in Mew Hall on North Campus of Cornell University. Being apart of the storage unit team, I helped design, construct, and install the unit shown above.

In terms of the composition of the facade, our group focused on developing an intriguing spatial element that contained both positive and negative space. We wanted to provide structure and order in the storage unit while also creating some diversity in the somewhat asymmetrical configuration of the openings. We also explored various patterns and their directionality, as well as experimented with the relationship between the two facades. Furthermore, our group wanted to make this experience of storing one’s items into a ritual, in which one can physically shed any of the burdens that they may be carrying with them. This process is meant to be a very natural experience, following one’s intuitive habits.
