Traveling with the Tide ads

This design was inspired by classic hand-drawn travel posters and postcards. The tower in the background is the "Denny Chimes," which is found just down the street from Denny Bryant Stadium, home of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Since the target audience of this ad is Alabama Alumni ages 55+, I thought the vintage look along with the "only locals know about it" landmark would resonate with our demographic.
I have two rules for advertisements. Do something unexpected, and make the reader/viewer feel something. When I was given this assignment I was sent a stock photo of a football sitting on turf with a note, "we were thinking about something like this." BORING! That would blend in nicely with all the other stock photos of footballs that fill the programs. I wanted something that would make the fans flipping through the guide to stop and take a second look. I wanted them to say, "what the heck? What does this have to do with football?" It needed to be something unexpected. And since our target demographic is old enough to remember the moon landings, well... And hey, fun fact, did you know that most of NASA's photos are available with a CC license?
Nothing too groundbreaking with this one, although I did think the tagline I came up with was clever. This photo was actually a daytime photo, but a little photoshop wizardry turned it into night.
This is a series of ads created for All Seasons Sports Travel to be printed in the programs and fan guides at the University of Alabama.
