In Confucianism, religion and philosophy of ancient China, orange was the colour of transformation, governed by the interaction of the yang and the yin. Yellow was the colour of perfection and nobility; red was the colour of happiness and power. Compared to light and fire, spirituality and sensuality, seemingly opposite but really complementary. Out of the interaction between the two came orange, the colour of transformation. It is the color of Guantanamo Bay jumpsuits. Also, black boxes on aircraft are orange in the hope this will make them easier to find in a crash. Irving Morrow decided to paint San Francisco’s Golden Bridge in a GGB International orange so it would blend with the hills but pop up against the sky. It is Hermes signature color as well. Kandinsky described orange as “a red brought nearer to humanity by yellow”. Orange power has been first illustrated by Impressionists with Monet’s "Impression Sunrise”. It has it own House , The House of Orange-Nassau which originated the feudal state of Principality of Orange.

In April 1895 Oscar Wilde was arrested in London and the following day the Westminster Gazette ran the headline: “ Arrest of Oscar Wilde, Yellow Book Under His Arm”. In the mid-nineteenth century Books in yellow covers were associated with sensationalist literature. Perversely, though, yellow ha simultaneously been a color of value and beauty. Blonde hair has been associated with the ideal, as gold with money and richness. In China yellow printed materials are often pornographic and also a particular egg yolk shade was the favored color of their emperors.

It was Shakespeare who cemented the relationship between green and envy, with The Merchant of Venice he gave us “green-eyed jealously”. In the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the capital of the Land of Oz is Esmerald City, walls are green, but the city itself is not. However, when they enter, everyone in the Emerald City is made to wear green-tinted eyeglasses; as an effort to protect their eyes from the "brightness and glory" of the city. The particular difficulties craftsmen and consumers had with green perhaps contributed to the color’s symbolic link with capriciousness, poison and even evil. In the later half of the nineteenth century whole districts of Paris smelt faintly herbal between 5 and 6 pm, a time that became known as “l’hour verte" as a consequence of the large consumption of absinthe. Nevertheless, for muslims green was associated with paradise and it was the favorite color of the Prophet Muhammad.

Originally known as Pitaya, Dragon Fruit is the fruit of several cactus species indigenous to the Americas. Pitaya flowers blossom only once and only at night (that's why they are called "Moonflowers”) as soon as the day breaks, the sun starts to dry their petals, which fall to the ground, revealing the budding fruit, which will develop into its unusual red or yellow oval “ball” shape enclosed in a thick waxy skin. It has an indefinable taste, somewhere between a kiwi and a pear, while others say it recalls watermelon, melon or prickly pear. According to the legend the fruit was created thousands of years ago by fire breathing dragons. During a battle when the dragon breathed fire the last thing to emerge would be the fruit. When the dragon was slain the fruit was collected by the victorious soldiers and presented to the Emperor as a coveted treasure.

Pomegranates are one of the only fruits purely made of seeds. Granate derives from Old French grenat, from Medieval Latin granatum as used in a different meaning "of a dark red color". The French term for pomegranate, grenade, has given its name to the military grenade. The number of seeds in a pomegranate can vary from 200 to about 1,400. The ancient city of Granada in Spain was renamed after the fruit during the Moorish period. In Ancient Greek mythology, the pomegranate was known as the "fruit of the dead" and believed to have sprung from the blood of Adonis. It is also traditional in Greece to break a pomegranate on the ground at weddings and on New Years. For the Jewish it is traditional to consume pomegranates on Rosh Hashana because, with its numerous seeds, it symbolizes fruitfulness. Also, it is said to have 613 seeds, which corresponds with the 613 commandments of the Torah. It has its own film “The Color of Pomegranates”, directed by Sergei Parajanov for which Nicolas Jaar composed an alternative score in 2015.

Red is the only color whose lighter shades have a different name, pink, than the color itself. At sunrise and sunset, when the path of the sunlight through the atmosphere to the eye is longest, the blue and green components are removed almost completely, leaving the longer wavelength which results in the remaining pinkish sunlight. In Thailand, pink is associated with Tuesday on the Thai solar calendar. Anyone may wear pink on Tuesdays, and anyone born on a Tuesday may adopt pink as their color. Diana Vreeland defined it as” the navy blue of India”. Raw meat is pink, Casa Rosada as well and even it has its own anthem: “Pink" by Aerosmith.

In nature, snow and clouds appear white. Most white animals have their color as a form of camouflage in winter. In China, white is associated with the masculine (the yang); the unicorn, the tiger; the direction of west; metal; and with the autumn season. The Ku Klux Klan adopted white as their color in their robes and hoods. There is a White Lie, a White Noise, a White House and even a White race. Ghosts and death are also associated to white. High-end modernists and minimalists from Tadao Ando to Calvin Klein and Steve Jobs used White as a statement too.

In Japan a deep purple, murasaki, was a forbidden color to ordinary people. In republican Rome it was a tightly constrained badge of status. Triumphant generals could wear a purple and gold robe; those in the field, plain purple. Senator, consuls and magistrates wore broad Tyrian. By the fourth century A.D only the emperor was allowed to wear purple, and anyone else caught wearing it could face death. Byzantine queens gave birth in wine-dark purple rooms so that the royal offspring were said to be born “in purple’ thus establishing their right to rule. For widows, purple was one of the first colors allowed to wear after two years of wearing plain black dresses as an expression of their grief. It was the color by excellence for impressionists who had the conviction that shadows were never black or gray but colored and it was the complementary color to the yellow sunlight. According to Manet “ the true color of the atmosphere is violet, the fresh air is violet”.
