이 책은 현재 한국사회에 팽배한 고정관념을 담고있다. 외모나 능력 혹은 현상에 대한 고정관념(Biased viepint)으로 사람들을 범주화하고 대상이 정상(normal)인지 비정상(ab-normal)인지 초정상(extremely-normal)인지 판단하는 상황을 리서치 하였다.
정상이라고 규정되는 사람들(straight)이나 비정상이라고 규정되는 사람들(strange)의 범주는 고정관념으로 인해 일어난 것을 깨닫게 하고자 한다.
There are stereotypes in every country, so in Korea. In our project we tried to define them in pictures as this book. We visualized society filled up with people who categorize others by appearance, skill and prejudices of society to divide them to normal or abnormal. We used typography, color, shape, icon to maximize this kind of situation. We want to encourage them to realize this kind of situations (prejudice, contrast – black and white -, prepossession) which are originated from stereotype.
평균, 범주의 잣대
고정관념으로 생긴 선입견은 ‘평균’을 만든다. 그리고 이 평균은 곧 정상을 의미한다. 평균에 가까워질수록 정상적인 사람이 된다. 사람들은 정상적인 사람이 되기 위해, 즉 평균에 속하기 위해 노력하며, 이러한 노력으로 인해 평균은 더욱 상승한다. 결국 평균은 진정한 평균이 아닌 것이 된다. 그리고 이렇게 평균이 상승하게 되는 상황은 평균치라는 특정한 범주를 만든다.
예를 들어 모범생이 시험에서 85점을 받았다고 가정한다면, 그 점수에 만족하기 보다는 90점 이상을 받지 못해 안타까워 할 것이다. 전체 시험 평균점수가 70점이었다고 한다면 그보다 15점이나 높은 85점은 충분히 잘한 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 85점은 만족스럽기는커녕 좌절감을 안겨준다. 모범생에게 평균은 95점 이상이 된다.
Average, Standard of Category
Stereotypes define what is called “normal” in a society. People have the innate desire to become part of the community. Therefore they began to conform to what is perceived as normal, a.k.a stereotype. As far as many people conform to the “normal”, the normal becomes at least statistically average. But a paradox exists. People dislike identifying themselves with what is normal seen as a standard. Thus they try to get ahead of the standard. This leads the average to go higher. As a result the average constantly goes up and yet it is fake average.

For instance, if there is a model student who got 85%, he will be not satisfied with it. He probably wanted to get 95% or more. If the average percentage of class was 70%, what he got was pretty good score. Nevertheless he is frustrated with his score and average of model student becomes 95%.
