A Century of Fad Dances ISTD 2017 Student Brief

This is a university project brief. My chosen topic was a century of dance fads. The print aims to collect introduce the most influential dance crazes of the past 100 years, starting from the ‘20s Charleston. The selection process for the dances was determined by their popularity and qualities to be best visualised on print. Initially I was experimenting with different themes, decades and interesting print solutions/executions. I aimed to find print finishes that provide extra context for the themes. In the development I focused on experimenting with the combination of art movements/patterns and dance moves characteristic of each decade, building the layouts on their accurate visual representation. I thought it was important to make the typography reflect the movements too. I was experimenting with different ways how to have the titles mimic the dance moves or to be read the same way as they were danced. The overlaid images allow to see the most typical moves from the dances, this together with the typographic solutions of the titles create a similar dynamism as in the actual dance. The placement of images and dates are the same on each layout with the same layout specifications, creating consistency through the print. The left/title page are left free for creative solutions, each individually tailored to collaborate with the right page/decade/image in style. The body of text is similarly integrated within each layouts as the supporting images and titles to offer an authentic and unique visualisation of the time and atmosphere of dance fads.
