Rocca Calascio, following Ladyhawke

Rocca Calascio, following Ladyhawke
Last August, while a friend of mine was back in Rome, he suggested we all go hiking in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park and more precisely to go up to Rocca Calascio, a mountaintop fortress.
I have heard lots about this place, also because back in 1985 they filmed some scenes of Ladyhawke in there, although I have never seen the movie, actually I saw it a few months later! The fortress was the monk’s home. Sequences for The Name of the Rose and The American were also shot here, so I was curious to go there and hike. First days of August, in center Italy: you can guess the weather! It was like 30°C and we were all sweating like hell.. it was such fun though!
We walked all day, for a total of 15 kms at least. The hardest part was not the hiking part, but the walk back to our cars on the roads in between the small towns with no shadows or trees at all! Yet, it was so much fun and the lunch in the middle of the clouds blew our minds! There was literally nothing around exception made for these barbeque grills you could use on your own and buy the meat and bread and wine in the shop – the only building! So recommended to try out at least once!
