Hungry Ghost Festival

The Hungry Ghost festival is a traditional Buddhist and Taoist festival celebrated in Malaysia and several other countries in Asia. During this festival, it is believed that ones' deceased ancestors roam the land of the living as spirits or ghosts. In an act of fidelity as well as protection from bad luck, offerings of incense and food are given to the spirits and the deity of hell, Da Shi Ye, depicted in blue here. Da Shi Ye is said to have red skin and blue armour, alluded in this depiction.

The bright colours used in this event poster was intentional so as to modernise this old and otherwise almost unknown festival. Perhaps, because of its connection to the spiritual, it is a festival that is dying out.
To accompany the poster, I designed an accompanying packaging design for incense (which is alluded in the Mandarin text). As part of the festival, paper money is sometimes burnt in order to "send" or "transfer" money to the heavens. In order to make the packaging for incense more useful, I thought of the possibility for printing the paper money on the insides of the incense packaging. This way, perhaps the customer would be able to send both incense as prayer as well as paper money. Instead of being thrown away, the packaging would take on some level of value to the consumer beyond being packaging.
