From south to north, El Zahraa metro station is the 13th station on Line 1, which is the longest and oldest metro line in Cairo, incorporating 45 km of metro tracks the majority of which lies at grade level. This has made it one of the strongest urban boundaries in the city leading to segregated neighborhoods and a number of other urban dysfunctions.
This redesign proposal envisions the railway corridor of Line 1 as an arterial spine of continuous pedestrian and cycling lanes transforming it into a connecting element on the city scale.
