Signage system for Gjøvik University College
Student project, Gjøvik University College, March 2008
This was a group project by Steinar Borø, Lars Erik Dokken, Sindre Bruflot og Nina Lysbakken. The project was chosen amongst other projects in my class, to be the signage system Høgskolen i Gjøvik produced and used as their own.

The signage system is developed in coherence with the identityproject for Gjøvik University College, a project that also can be viewed in my projects. These two projects both started within a year apart from each other, and together they constitute the visual profile of Gjøvik University College.

In this project we worked on making the signage system user friendly, and at the same time 'spicing' up the buildings and the many white walls. We wanted to communicate that this is a modern college, small enough to be personal; the school is a small school with 1600 students, but also big enough to be at a very high technological level; modern technology is an important ingredient in all the departments from the health department to the media department. Within different academic environments, the school is both known for information security research and color research laboratories.

Our group worked integrated on the project, and my role was mainly on the idea and consept, in addition to the work on all the icons used in the system.

The pictures below shows both pictures of the solution in real life, concept visualizations of the system, in addition to technical illustrations. I have also added some 'before'-pictures in the end, that shows some of the signs that existed before, which made the navigation on the school difficult, since there was no holistic approach to it.

Detail of a 3D-map of the campus, that is used on large information signs along the road. The view of the 3D-map changes depending on what direction you come from. This is more user friendly than what existed before – several of my classmates acctually got a better mental mapping of the school by watching these kinds of map at our presentation, than by walking around at some of the schools buildings (and was after having studied there for two years...).

The different buildings has different colours on the signs, according to the different departments of the school. This also corresponds to another of my projects; the identityproject for the same school; Gjøvik University College.
