This design for a map of Barcelona is inspired by the elegant visual style, coloration and typography of early twentieth-century city maps. Major streets and thoroughfares, railway termini, metro stations, landmarks, parks, gardens, lakes and bridges are all carefully delineated and labelled. The courses of all the various underground railways are depicted by dashed black lines. Hills and variations in the land height are picked out with subtle shading. The design is finished with a simple, elegant border and title, with a symbol key and scale bar along the bottom edge.
My intention is to produce a series of printed maps in this style of different cities around the world.
Software used
Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop for shaded relief.
Typefaces
The main typeface used is Modern No. 20 (regular, bold and italic) with district names written in outlined Bureau Grotesque.
