Mogwai :: Burning Poster
Burning Poster Competition
Mogwai have been one of my favourite bands for the last 10 years (they are also pretty local, coming from in and around Glasgow), so when I heard of the competition to design a poster for their forthcoming film, I jumped at the chance.

Unfortunately I didn't win this time around, but I'm really happy with my entries.

Competition Brief

Brief Overview
Burning, is the band Mogwais concert film collaboration with Vincent Moon and Nathanael Le Scouarnac. Following its release on August 24th (packaged with accompanying album Special Moves), there will be full screenings of the film in multiple locations around the US and Canada. This is a contest to design what will be the official poster for these screenings.

"This film, Burning, is just one of a thousand Mogwai concert films to have ever been made. No, in fact, tens of thousands. How many people have seen the Scots rock band play live since they formed in Glasgow in 1995? That many, anyway. From sci-fi dystopia to kitchen-sink drama, everyone who experiences this band in concert will make a brand new movie in their head every time.

Mogwai create their own instrumental soundtrack to the imagination, and its up to us what we do with it. This isnt a band who tell us what to think, this is a band who show us how much we can feel.

For directors Vincent Moon and Nathanaël Le Scouarnec (REM: Supernatural Superserious; Take-Away Shows), the three night residency they recorded at Brooklyns Music Hall of Williamsburg in early 2009 presented itself as a modern urban noir thriller, a black-and-white journey which starts on the same electrifying New York streets Bernard Hermann scored for Martin Scorsese. Manholes hiss steam, taxi headlights flare in the camera lens and strangers wait in street corner shadows."

Target Audience
Target audience for this is indie-rock music fans - both male and female (18-35 years).

Artwork should complement Mogwais aesthetic and album artwork for this film. This is most easily conveyed through their website (http://www.mogwai.co.uk/order/us/), Facebook (www.facebook.com/mogwai) and in a clip from the film featuring Im Jim Morrison, Im Dead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EfuLuN0VXs).

Burning is posed as an art house film with screenings at venues such as Brooklyns Music Hall of Williamsburg, San Franciscos Roxie Theater, Portlands Bagdad Theater, New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art, LAs Echoplex and Torontos The Underground the Drake Hotel.

The piece will serve as the screenings memorabilia in years to come.
