The Epic of Gilgamesh

The Epic of Gilgamesh

This project dealt with the ancient story of The Epic of Gilgamesh and tending to the
story in the form of a book. The epic dates back to 2100 BC and was originally written
in cuneiform on six stone tablets. The design creates a contemporary version of the book while still preserving the theme of ancient exploration present throughout the journey.
Research

My research was focused on geography and desert landscapes. The setting of Gilgamesh took place in Mesopotamia, what is now modern-day Iraq. I gathered inspiration from topographical maps and the warm colors that are consistent within a desert landscape.
Iterations

In order to achieve a contemporary feel to an old tale, I decided to take an illustrative
approach. The iterations explore the theme of the journey Gilgamesh is on throughout
the story. I implemented desert landscape hues into my iterations.
Final Design

The Epic of Gilgamesh’s final design offers readers a contemporary feeling to an ancient tale. The cover showcases a topographical illustration to further leverage the idea of
Gilgamesh’s epic journey. The body copy is set in a sans-serif and you can find uniquely curated illustrations at the beginning of each chapter.
