THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

An anxious, impatient, young woman must retrieve an important sheet of paper that flew out of her hands to the other side of the street whilst facing her biggest enemy – the inconsiderate road traffic that comes to life every time she steps on the street.

This pre-production project was a part of “Pehle Aap” (trnsl. You first) wherein we as a class explored the nuances of courtesy and lack thereof in Indian public spaces. One such antagonist that all of us face on a daily basis is the unruly street traffic.
Considering that pedestrians include children, the disabled as well as animals – this project sheds light on the fear surrounding it, the very apparent lack of consideration on current Indian roads (especially junctions without traffic signals). Further, this concept is a metaphorical manifestation of a subgroup theory of the chaos theory called the butterfly effect, which states that small causes can have large effects.
Process
The conceptual process involved conjuring a simple scenario on the street and exaggerating the helplessness of my character by piling obstacles in front of her; each one ebbing from the lack of courtesy on streets.
