Our approach took the music as a starting point to explore the possibility that music itself has a transformative power on the listener, creating a magic in their ear as we created a visual magic on stage.  We built scenes out of simple elements and twisted some elements to heighten their individual magic to create a very fluid and lucid world on stage.

We used a kind of visual foley to create scenery, objects in abstract close up becoming mountains or chalk drawings creating the texture of a forest, constantly merging from one into another.  On top of this was layered pre recorded footage or other live cameras.

We used a series of broken projection surfaces that actors, signers, chorus and extras were constantly moving though.  We could project from the front, the back and all over the floor.

The Production will come to Le Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, France in Summer 2014.

"magical video images by Finn Ross, who conjures dreamlike visions of the serpent (a huge boa constrictor) pursuing Tamino, the portrait of Pamina, and perhaps the most effective trials by fire and water I have ever seen (in the latter, Pamina and Tamino appear to float, submerged, thanks to Ross’s film work and old-fashioned theatre-flying techniques). Schikaneder, great showman-impresario that he was, would surely have approved."
