Santos Paintings, Late 2017

This series of mixed media paintings on canvas kept me busy after a major studio move in late September 2017. I was processing my reaction to the recent election, feeling unmoored, fearful and angry.  Like others, I found it hard to focus on making art when so much seems to be uncertain. And yet, art is what resuscitated my purpose. These images are about resistance, standing up, recognizing the paralysis of negativity and the power in action, in declaration. I don't think of myself as a political artist. And yet, all art is political, even if in response or reaction. With this work I shift into new projects, as you will see in 2018. Change is inevitable, just like aging. We can either be passive or we can embrace it. And when I say embrace, that means wrestling it to the ground like a warrior.
