The choice of illustrations were simply points I felt had the most interest and whichever could set up the scene in my head vividly (as this is pretty key to communicate); I also liked varying the illustrations in different parts of the story.

For The Man with the Twisted Lip, it came down to emotions of the lonely man, and the stories he was about to explain about his life, and trying to get by. And finally the Mustgrave Ritual, though this scene isn’t distinctly in the book (the butler being pulled out from the hole), it is significant and quite grotesque, as it describes that they only realised it was the Butler once they were able to pull him out (in retrospect).
