FIBER OPTICS

Mixed Media Sculpture
6" Wide Crocheted Frames

Fiber Optics is a conceptual piece I’ve created that intertwines through
the world of consumerism and the internet. I’ve listened to much of the
Internet music genre named “Vaporwave” and some of the sub-genres

between them. It interests me because it is one of the first music genres
to start off and remain completely international. One sub genre in particular
that correlates to my piece is a sub genre called “Mall Soft.“ This genre plays
upon the experience within a shopping mall and pokes fun with capitalistic
culture. I wanted to connect the culture of Mall Soft with the world of fibers.
Along with my obsession with this music I found time to produce a small
collection with the moniker of Pantone 7591c.

Most of our world is unfortunately following the trend of capitalism and
some of us are either unaware or turn our cheeks towards the use of
sweatshop labor in order for us to get “cheaper” clothing. Within the lens
of these spectacles are contrasting images with the right, being most
commonly known as the dominant eye, glamour and advertising while
the left has children working in sweatshops with horrible working conditions.
Just like this piece itself, we have to step back in scope to see the big picture.
We are all aware of this and can educate others more via the internet.
As anyone wears these glasses, it is just a blur or as if we are all blind to
the inhuman acts done just for a higher profit. It is also the conceptual
scope of the subject being under our noses, if you step back you will
see the bigger picture more clearly.
