This is what you can do simply by creating a pattern, varying stroke widths, and finding a suitable font. Enjoy!
The outlying pattern was made into a pattern brush. The leaves use varying stroke widths available within Illustrator.
SPQR is the font within the shield. Lithos and Avenir form the nameplate. SPQR and Lithos were used to pay homage to my mixed Mediterranean heritage.
