Architectonic Jewellery: inspired by Juha Leiviska

‘Myyrmaki’, a Parish Church in Vantaa, Finland. 1980 - 84(4.12.). Leiviska’s Myyrmaki Church is a space that useslight as a structural material to transmit veils of light thatfill the interior. Leiviska’s signature as an architect is hisevocative use of light; correspondingly light is perhaps considered to be one of Finland’s most valuable assets.Positioned at the edge of the Arctic Circle, the result isan extreme fluctuation in the quality and quantity of lightbetween summer and winter.This intensity of availablelight has greatly influenced the architecture, whichmust take advantage of these atmospheric polarities tosensitively attune to the environment.

Layers of vellum were used to build updifferent levels of translucency and create textures oflight.These variations aimed to change the qualities oflight, in response to Leiviska’s architecture.
