North Avenue Market

North Avenue Market
environmental design

Baltimore's North Avenue Market was a modern marvel and boon to its neighborhood when it was built in 1928. Though the space has been largely neglected in recent years, this project imagined the space as a revitalized public market. After researching the neighborhood and public markets around the country, I developed an exterior and interior graphics system for the space.
In developing my concept, I looked both to the past and present of the North Avenue Market and its surroundings. When the Market opened, it was a forerunner to the modern supermarket: an indoor (and air-conditioned!) space where shoppers could find nearly everything they were looking for. Today, it is situated in the Station North neighborhood, a state-designated Arts District that is home to numerous venues that have recentely opened in refurbished historic buildings.
For inspiration, I looked to the vibrant murals of Station North, traditional public market signage, and hand-painted signs, including "ghost signs" which can be found throughout Baltimore, and vintage grocery store signage.
