BUZZ located at 44 West 18th Street is a specialty coffee shop, where a coffee lover can purchase, sample, and experience all things coffee. On top of selling coffee and espresso appliances, accessories, and beans BUZZ also offer tastings, lessons on how to make your favorite drink, and also sample out the new appliances they have on sale.
BUZZ was inspired by the hummingbird. The hummingbird is an introverted animal, they fly to their food source, eat, and then go on with their day - and this can be seen in parallel with your average New Yorker. New Yorkers wake up, grab their coffee, go to work, and then head home, but never truly taking a moment to enjoy their coffee. BUZZ would like to break this habit by creating a communal space where all coffee and espresso lovers can come together to share their passion, and hopefully, once they purchase the items they can keep expanding this community at home or workplace.
Some of the ways the hummingbird was brought into the design were, having an inverted birdcage top in the center of the store, with the chandelier acting like the plant where birds feed off of. Another aspect that was brought into the design was the curved walls that followed the swoon of the flying bird. And lastly was the play with scale, the lighting fixtures, and displays are larger than they typically would be to make the customer feel small like a buzzing hummingbird.
