Business Not As Usual (Aquidneck Island, RI)

To develop a planning strategy for Aquidneck Island, RI -- an island covering nearly 18,000 acres and three towns. Portsmouth in the north, Middletown covering the center of the island, and Newport, the most densely developed, in the southern part of the island. The region is not expected to grow very much, thus making traditional densification strategies impractical, but has scenic views and agricultural land worth preserving.

To stitch the disjointed visual landscape of the three towns on Aquidneck Island together to create a more cohesive experience for visitors and residents. The overall strategy is to intensify and further articulate the existing scenic and commercial qualities on the island. Rather than diluting the commercial areas and dispersing it throughout, this project encourages a more centralized use of the land along existing infrastructural corridors.
