During the course of this departmental elective we found ourselves in the NID Print Labs, getting our hands dirty and exploring different methods of relief printing. We understood the principle of printing using relief and recessed surfaces.
We etched our initial explorations on foam boards, inked them with rollers and took numerous impressions till we got neat prints.
The etching needs to be done as a mirror image. Below you'll find that the text 'Turvy Topsy Turvy' wasn't mirrored while etching.
A combination of foam board impression (illustration) and letterpress (text).
An exploration in manually inking the metal type with two different blue inks.
Composing the metal type into the forme. The line spacing in set with leads and after the type is set, it is locked tightly in place with magnets.
The final assignment was done in groups of three. Ours made notebooks. Here are some of the initial ideas.
The inside of the back cover was printed with a foam board on which the Morse code was etched. The last page was printed using metal type on the proofing machine.
The cover was printed using a nylo on a platen press. Different coloured inks and paper were used.
