Mother's Day / Background Design

For the animated short film Mother's Day I was in charge (besides the creation and animation of the characters Devil's Mother, Devil's Imps and Cereberus) of creating and animating the following backgrounds.

Process

We came to the realization that the creation of the backgrounds would be simplified if we structured the architectonic bases in 3D. These were modeled very rapidly in Maya as they were mere references in which the important thing to retain was the perception of depth and perspective, allowing us to maintain racord between

several plans of a scene. In Photoshop, we outlined the contours of the background (guided by the rendered images) and then we colored it. After this, we animated the backgrounds creating several visual effects.

Animation and VFX

Below are a few examples I created of frame-by-frame animation of light, fire, wind and smoke and of interpolated animation done in After Effects such as the effect of the screen turning on, the wiggle of the elevator, the parallax, the heat effects and the motion blur.
