La sinestesia è un fenomeno sensoriale/percettivo, che indica una “contaminazione” dei sensi nella percezione, consistente nell’insorgenza di due sensazioni coesistenti di natura sensoriale diversa, situazione in cui una stimolazione uditiva, olfattiva, tattile o visiva è percepita come due eventi distinti ma conviventi. Nella sua forma più blanda è presente in molti individui, spesso dovuta al fatto che i nostri sensi, pur essendo autonomi, non agiscono in maniera del tutto distaccata dagli altri. Più indicativo di un’effettiva presenza di sinestesia è il caso in cui il percepire uno stimolo (come ad esempio il suono) provoca una reazione netta e propria di un altro senso (ad esempio la vista).
Il fenomeno è involontario, ma una maggiore attenzione prestata dal soggetto può evocarlo con maggiore consapevolezza, al punto che il sinesteta puro, vedendo i suoni e sentendo i colori, può riuscire a trarre vantaggio da queste contaminazioni sensoriali. Si presenta a volte nelle persone con scarso senso dell’orientamento, dislessia, deficit dell’attenzione e, raramente, autismo. Sintomi simili si possono ricongiungere ad un profilo neurologico di disturbo “borderline”, anche se non è stato ufficializzato il collegamento. Tale manifestazione può verificarsi sia in condizioni di normalità, specie nei soggetti giovani, sia essere indotte in maniera artificiale, mediante l’uso di sostanze allucinogene, sostanze stupefacenti come l’LSD, esperienze di deprivazione sensoriale, meditazione, ed in alcuni tipi di malattie che colpiscono la corteccia cerebrale.
Con “/si·ne·ste·ṣì·a/” il mio intento è quello di accompagnare lo spettatore, sinesteta o meno, attraverso un percorso multisensoriale.

Synesthesia is a sensory/perceptive phenomenon, which indicates a "contamination" of the senses in perception, consisting in the onset of two coexisting sensations of different sensorial nature, a situation in which auditory, olfactory, tactile or visual stimulation is perceived as two distinct events cohabiting. In its mildest form, it is present in many individuals, often due to the fact that our senses, while being autonomous, don't act completely detached from others. More indicative of an effective presence of synaesthesia is the case in which the perceiving of a stimulus (such as the sound) provokes a clear and proper reaction of another sense (for example the sight).
The phenomenon is involuntary, but a greater attention given by the subject can evoke it with greater awareness, to the point that the pure synaesthete, seeing the sounds and feeling the colors, can be able to take advantage of these sensory contaminations. It occurs sometimes in people with poor sense of orientation, dyslexia, attention deficit and, rarely, autism. Similar symptoms can be reunited with a "borderline" neurological disorder profile, even if the link has not been formalized yet.
This manifestation may occur both under normal conditions, especially in young subjects, and be artificially induced, through the use of hallucinogenic substances, drugs such as LSD, experiences of sensory deprivation, meditation, and in some types of diseases affecting the cerebral cortex.
