Wayfinding Design:
Faculty of Language & Linguistics (FLL), University Malaya
A Final Major Project, Graphic Design BA, 2015.
The logo (top right) is the faculty's identity sign that also serves as a landmark, the first thing visitors would notice when they enter the faculty's exterior premise.

The directional sign (bottom left) in dark turquoise against white letters gives it a strong contrast in the open space under direct sunlight.
The monument identity sign, near the staircase entrance.

The sign includes the title in Malay, "Fakulti Bahasa & Linguistik". The white concrete base is bright and gives a good contrast for the logo to sit on.

As a side suggestion: the Malaysian and university flags are put up vertically, rather than its original way (limp). This is so it can be noticeable to visitors coming from either side, especially from the direction of the main entry point (Right of picture).

It presents an overall prominent and prestigious look with the monument.
Main Corridor
The interior directional sign is a full-height length sign, painted according to the corridor color code of the building map design. The flat mounted sign panel is placed on it, approximately 210-240cm in bottom height for sufficient space of readability and for users to walk pass without blocking it.

The sign colors gives a branding consistency as well as looking professional. For maintenance, it would be convenient to maintain because the plates can easily be reprinted and remounted.

The layout displays the most important places (in this particular corridor it is the nearby lobby) followed by other key places along the corridor. It also follows a typography hierarchy style according to the heading, primary direction and secondary direction names.

The signs must be noticeable from different standpoints to be both functional and decorative.

With the attractive turquoise color, it catches the eye from afar and uses abstract background for visual interest. The different tones of the turquoise makes the sign gradually come into focus from the left, especially since the narrow corridors have sharp turnings.

For better readability, the abstract background leaves a small space to the wall edge.
Middle Corridor
This purple color code gives the wall an energetic and contemporary feel.

It doesn't distract from the sign's readability and at the same time it shows the color coding system of the faculty signage.

The signage also displays bilingual texts to appeal to Malaysians and international users.
Information Area
The turquoise wall is attractive from a longer distance because other areas would be fully (in suggestion) of white. It would also give more prominence to this area being the main wayfinding information area for all visitors.

By giving the 'Wayfinding Map' title, visitors can quickly notice where the first place is for getting directions around the faculty.

Since natural lighting comes from the lobby entrance (left of picture) the wall and sign would naturally be illuminated. Suggested material for the sign is aluminium plate with digital printing for graphics.
