Kastle in Transylvania

Sükösd-Bethlen Castle - Racoş
The castle from Racoș is considered to be one of the historical monuments constructed in the time of the Principles Bethlen–Rákóczi, due to its four turrets located on the corners, being one of the early examples of turreted castles, which became popular in the 17th century in Transylvania. Today, the castle is in a semi-ruinous state, some of its parts are in precarious condition, but it can be visited upon request.
Szentkereszty Castle - Arcuş
This wonderful two-storey, Eclectic style castle - combining Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance elements - got its today’s form at the end of 1890s. The constructions were commissioned by baron Béla Szentkereszty. The castle is surrounded by a beautiful English park of over nine hectares. The main attraction of the park is the lake, which also houses a small bridge-accessible island.
Bánffy Castle Bonţida
Formerly known as the Transylvanian Versailles, the Bánffy Castle from Bonțida was gradually built from the 16th century. After several constructions in Renaissance and Baroques styles, in the middle of the 19th century a relevant reconstruction took place, namely the façade of the castle’s western wing was rebuilt in Romantic style. The building got its final shape during the interwar period. Today, the property is administrated by the Transylvania Trust Foundation. The castle can be visited, an Art Café and accommodation sites are also functioning on the estate.
Bánffy Castle - Bonţida

Bethlen Castle - Bahnea
The Bethlen Castle is a three-storey building – cellar, ground floor and upper floor – with 42 rooms. The exterior of the castle can be classified as Romantic due to the major reconstructions from the mid-19th century, while the carpentry (window frames, doors and wooden ceiling) reminds of the Neo-Renaissance and Romantic styles. In 2008, Fruzsina Bethlen, daughter of Ádám Bethlen managed to reclaim the property. Soon after, she donated the estate to the Transylvanian Protestant Church.
Damokos Dénes Manor House - Cernat
The old manor was probably built at the turn of the 17-18th centuries. In 1821, two additional rooms were added, one at the south-eastern side, and another one at the western side. At the main entrance, there was a memorial plaque ordered in August 1919 by the last owners of the house, Damokos Dénes and his wife, Hatolykai Pótsa Klára. The plaque commemorated the end of the five-year long war. The renovated manor is situated in the center of the village, it is in good condition, and it hosts the Mayor’s Office.
Bánffy Castle - Sâncrai
The castle’s construction began in the last decade of the 19th century, and it was commissioned by baron Bánffy Jenő. The building was designed by a renowned architect from Cluj: Lajos Pákei and it was built by Maetz Frigyes. The castle’s style is a good example for Transylvanian Historicism: its floor plan is irregular, its facades have various shapes and the overall effect is picturesque, fairytale-like. The castle and the park are the property of Alba County Council. The renovation of the building has been finished recently.
Bánffy Castle - Ciuguzel
The Bánffy family owns an estate of approximately 50 hectares in Ciuguzel. The estate includes a beautiful Baroque-style manor house, a recently renovated old house, a garden and forests. The manor house, a two-storey building with a mansard roof, is in good condition, however it necessitates serious major renovation work. The estate was regained by the Bánffy family in 2004, who have renovated the old house and use it as their temporary home.
Gaál Manor House - Dalnic
The Gaál Manor, considered the jewel of Dalnic, is located at the foot of a hill, in wonderful natural surroundings. The two-story manor house was built in 1844, and it has been recently renovated. Today it functions as a modern, elegant guest house: on its ground floor a salon, dining room and a wine cellar were set up. Upstairs there are modern guest rooms with bathrooms adjusting to the latest comfort requirements.
Fráter Manor House - Galoşpetreu
There are two Fráter manors in the village – this one being built in 1896 is the more recent one. The special character of the manor house is given by its Eclectic style main façade with six columns. The recently renovated manor houses the Trinity Children Centre of the Saint Francis Foundation from Deva.

The Teleki Castle, one of the most beautiful Baroque castles in Transylvania, is surrounded by a spacious park of five hectares. The former Renaissance moat and ditch are still visible today, circling around the castle; elements of the old English park - the Ginko Biloba, Bald cypress, horse chestnuts, cigar-trees and many willow trees, oaks and plane trees - still decorate the garden after centuries. A few years ago, the castle was functioning as a children's home. Today, it is owned again by the Teleki family.

Rákóczy-Bánffy Castle - Gilău
The Castle from Gilău is one of the earliest castles with rectangular plans in Transylvania. The original building dates to the mid-fifteenth century – as stated in the written documents. The rectangular shape and the massive size of today’s castle were achieved in several stages of constructions. The last major construction took place in the second part of the 19th century. Currently, the castle is under renovation, but the castle's park is open to visitors during some events (e.g. the Castle Garden Festival, The Hungarian Day of the Transylvanian Film Festival (TIFF).
Teleki Castle - Satulung
The first Teleki Castle in Satulung was built by Teleki Mihály in 1711, but today’s Eclectic castle was constructed around 1891, during the time of Teleki László Gyula. After the fall of Communism, no one has claimed the property, therefore after 1989 the local council sold it to a wealthy businessman, who nicely restored the building and opened a hotel here.
Degenfeld Castle - Cuci
The Castle from Cuci was built at the initiative of Count Degenfeld Miksa Kristóf, who commissioned a manor house at the beginning of the 19th century. Subsequently, this building was extended with two wings by Degenfeld Lajos at the beginning of the 20th century. The building used to be surrounded by a beautiful dendrological park and used to have two greenhouses as well. Recently, the castle was regained by the Degenfeld family. The estate is in good condition, but it does not have a function yet.
Csernovics Castle - Macea
The left wing of the Csernovics Castle with its two towers was built in the first half of the 19th century, while its right wing was built between 1862 and 1886, based on the plans of Miklós Ybl. In its original park, there were greenhouses and a swimming pool. The remaining 17 hectares of the castle park has been declared as protected arboretum in 1968 as it serves home to various rare trees. Today, the building hosts the Vasile Goldiș Western University from Arad.
Urmánczy Castle - Topliţa
The Urmánczy Castle was built during the first decade of the 20th century. The style of the building combining the elements of the Art Nouveau with the features of the Transylvanian folk architecture is unique in the Transylvanian. Currently, the castle does not have a function, but it can be visited on request. The castle and its park can host cultural events especially during summer.
Gyulay Castle - Mintia
The Gyulay Castle from Mintia in the largest Classicist style castle in Transylvania. It is located at only 5 km from Deva city, in the middle of a beautiful 5-hectares park. In the park, there are several 300-years-old oak and plane trees, which surround the imposing building, constructed in the 1830s. The descendants of the Horváth-Tholdi family have regained the estate, and it is open for visitors.
Kemény Castle - Brâncovenești
The castle from Brâncovenești has a long history of hundreds of years, but it is probably most famous for its role in the Transylvanian literary world from the beginning of the 20th century. It was in the garden of this beautiful castle, where baron János Kemény together with the most famous writers and poets of the time, founded the well-known literary community called Helikon in 1926. The descendants of the Kemény family succeeded in regaining the castle in 2014. The castle can be visited and it hosts cultural events as well.

Daniel Castle - Tălişoara
Like the other noble buildings in the region of Baraolt, this castle was also constructed in the late-Renaissance style, and was later extended with a Classicist wing during the 19th century. Today this fantastic monument building and its peaceful surroundings host a modern, luxury hotel. Each room has its original design based on a specific theme - some of them are decorated by the original Renaissance mural paintings, antique furniture and fireplaces. The style of the hotel combines perfectly the atmosphere of old, noble times with the latest interior design trends that assure its elegance and comfort.
Daniel Castle - Tălişoara
Like the other noble buildings in the region of Baraolt, this castle was also constructed in the late-Renaissance style, and was later extended with a Classicist wing during the 19th century. Today this fantastic monument building and its peaceful surroundings host a modern, luxury hotel. Each room has its original design based on a specific theme - some of them are decorated by the original Renaissance mural paintings, antique furniture and fireplaces. The style of the hotel combines perfectly the atmosphere of old, noble times with the latest interior design trends that assure its elegance and comfort.

Originally there was a manor serving as a summer residence, which was transformed into an Eclectic castle at the end of the 19th century by Count Teleki Géza, who has built here a beautiful castle with a huge park. The roof of the castle has been renovated, its windows are missing and its plaster is hardly present. The castle can be reconstructed completely.

Originally there was a manor serving as a summer residence, which was transformed into an Eclectic castle at the end of the 19th century by Count Teleki Géza, who has built here a beautiful castle with a huge park. The roof of the castle has been renovated, its windows are missing and its plaster is hardly present. The castle can be reconstructed completely.
Purgly Castle - Șofronea
The first part of the castle was built in 1789, it was commissioned by Purgly János. In the second part of the 19th century, the castle was rebuilt in Eclectic style. Today, the estate is administered by the Humanitas Gura Popii Foundation, who restored the building. Behind the castle there functions a thermal bath. The foundation plans to establish a conference center in the castle.
Kornis Castle - Mănăstirea
The originally Medieval castle has been reconstructed and extended several times along the centuries. The last construction works were commissioned by Zsigmond Kornis, thus in 1702 the gate tower with a hinged bridge and the wolf pit – characteristic for this estate – were made. Above the gate, the Kornis family's coat of arms and the year of construction are still visible today. In 2006, the castle was returned to Countess Gabriella Kornis, and today the building is the property of her descendants. The Classicist style new building together with the old eastern tower necessitate renovation.
Kornis Castle - Mănăstirea
The originally Medieval castle has been reconstructed and extended several times along the centuries. The last construction works were commissioned by Zsigmond Kornis, thus in 1702 the gate tower with a hinged bridge and the wolf pit – characteristic for this estate – were made. Above the gate, the Kornis family's coat of arms and the year of construction are still visible today. In 2006, the castle was returned to Countess Gabriella Kornis, and today the building is the property of her descendants. The Classicist style new building together with the old eastern tower necessitate renovation.
Bran Castle - Bran
Bran castle was built in 1377 on top of a 100-m tall mountain. On its northern side, there is a three-storey tower, as well as a seven-storey quadratic tower which narrows towards the interior part and is fitted with a watchtower on top. The castle has been completely renovated and it is open to visitors.
Temesváry Manor House - Ozun
The manor house was most probably built in the second half of the 19th century as suggested by its Eclectic style. After the regime change, the descendants of the Temesváry family reclaimed the castle and the estate belonging to it, therefore in the year of 2000 it became the property of Nagyosy Zoltán from Cluj-Napoca. Currently, the building houses a kindergarten bearing the name of Temesváry János.
Zichy Castle - Voivodeni
The history of the ensemble of buildings in Voivodeni, known under the name of Zichy Manor, is unknown, but its stylistic features suggest that we are dealing with a complex of buildings built in the 18th century or in the first decades of the 19th century. Currently, the castle is under renovation.

Mikes Castle - Zăbala
The main castle building today serves as home to the Roy Chowdhury-Mikes family, but on the estate, there are several other buildings, which function as guest houses, and there is a restaurant and a ceremony hall too. The castle gained its monumental aspect in 1867, when Earl Mikes Benedek reconstructed and extended the old mansion. The elegant castle building, the amazing English park with several lakes, symmetrical alleys and the beautifully restored outbuildings, are open for visitors.
Szentiványi Manor House - Sântionlunca
The Szentiványi manor house is situated in the middle of a four-hectares estate. The main facade of the manor house is asymmetrical - it has five windows to the left of the main entrance and three to the right. During communism, the building has deteriorated. Its current owners, Kelemen Mihály and Gizella, have renovated the manor completely.
