Tears tell you more than words (Dutch: Tranen zeggen meer dan woorden)

My graduation project is about networked images. How do we read images? Are we capable of understanding them?
I got fascinated by the news in december 2011 when hundreds of North Koreans were engulfed in indescribable sadness and got all over the news, all over the world. Because their leader had died. As a European I wasn't quite sure how to interpretate these images. Is this real? Are they scared? Oppressed? What is next? Will I ever be able to understand their situation?
And so I started my visual exploration of emotions. We can all relate to them and the emotion culture now a days makes it hard for some to see what is real and what is simulated. The media plays a big part in all of this. We are constantly running around in a world where the news tends to seek for more and more sensation and reality-tv shows are an inspiration for the younger generation.
The media is manipulative and by taking the pictures out of their context, combining them and inform you about a few manipulated images which were used by the worlds biggest news agency Reuters for example I am showing you my point of view. And I hope the reader will realise once more that nothing is what it seems.
