The Zeitgeist
The Zeitgeist is a graphic design project reflecting the current political situation of Korea. This project is a record of us, Koreans, which captures the features of our life under the malfunctioning national system today. The systemized illustrations of events, objects, structures, and people track and visualize our spirit of this age.
Systematized with modules, pictograms are used to show many real-life events; the appearances of objects, structures, and people are resized and simplified in proportion to their actual sizes. Cameras, obstacles, and ‘Do not Access’ signs represent the government’s surveillance, oppression, and control against citizens. Speakers express the importance of the Press. Based on the Canon of Proportions, standard body proportions of people were measured. Dynamic motion is added to show the abuse of governmental authority. The Rising Sun Flag, a symbol of the Japanese imperialism, is set on the background to represent the remnants of Japanese colonialism and the military dictatorships, which should have been cleared away in the past.
There is no blank in the layout of posters and letters. Different costumes mean different social classes among people. Central figures of the event are located on the center, and the further away from the center, the lower their ranks are. This represents the abnormal power and oppression of the past regimes of Lee Myungbak and Park Geunhye, where police force was used to construct a fortress against candlelight rallies and demonstrations of citizens. (One example is Myung-bak-San-sung, the fortress of Myungbak, on June 10th 2008. Lee’s regime used the police to build barricades throughout Seoul to block demonstrators from clashing with police and approaching to the Blue House. The goal of the demonstration was to mark the 21st anniversary of the June Democracy Movement in 1987, which brought forward a significant progress in the history of Korean democracy)
