In June 1940, the Baltic States – Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia – were occupied and incorporated into Soviet Union. During the years of Soviet occupation in the Baltics, two mass deportations took place in 1941 and 1949, during which a total of over 200 000 civilians from the Baltic States were deported to distant regions of Soviet Union.
