Scenario:

There  is a big movement in Portugal regarding music, centered in Lisbon but also in Porto and other surrounding cities such as Leiria, Barcelos, Braga or Coimbra, of young people making different types of music: spanning different genres and subgenres of rock-music, ranging from indie, folk, psychedelic and garage, to electronic music, hip hop and African rhythms, etc.

Music is closely connected to other artistic expressions such as illustration and graffiti. The thing they have in common is that it’s all very DIY; small record labels which are usually run by the musicians themselves. Everyone works closely together, sharing spaces, concerts, events, experiences  - and, most importantly they're smashing barriers by blending diverse musical and artistic genres.

A new trend is to stand apart from traditional event venues (such as nightclubs, traditional concert venues, etc.) and to prioritize artist residences, gigs, record-label signings or mixed-media galleries/events.

For example, recreational and cultural centres, sports centres and old buildings. These places can be found in the centre of Lisbon - Bairro Alto, Alfama, Graça, Indendente - or suburban areas experiencing a cultural renaissance through cultural activity or new start-ups, etc. Marvila-Zabregas, near the Expo or the Eastern zone, etc.

These are multidisciplinary spaces, housed in beautiful old buildings with plenty of personality. They’ve already got what we’re looking for and this is a huge advantage, because these days the people love these places. And not just fashionistas or hipsters - these spaces are for real people who need substance: Raw, real, cheap and all-inclusive on every level. People who organise these events are already used to dealing with creatives from record labels, artists, street artists, promoters and other underground arts.

Strategy:

People calls people and multidisciplinary spaces call people in Portugal.

We want to be similar to that but to make a difference also. We thought about clusters: geolocations where a lot of the same type of business congregate and they become a reference for the clients. You not only need to do one thing, you can do more than one, or you can always find what you are looking for, if not in one shop, to the next.

Young people in Portugal have united in order to move and create cultural events with their own resources. The implementation of organic networks is highly visible in the territory of music where they create events in common and take them all over Portugal, collaborating with similar local organisations.

They have a good network of contacts, allowing them to make things happen with minimal expense. They have learn how to make things with little money but they would still appreciate some help with resources that allow them to develop their passion and even turn it into a business/ career.

Concept: MUSIC TOWN

We will introduce MUSIC TOWN, the born of an platform dedicated to music, where musicians and an enthusiastic audience meet for one experience: Music.

One place to discover, learn, create and share ideas. The first experience will integrated a exposition area connecting events and a studio lab area.

One powerful event in the city to form a cultural movement, providing a springboard for new ideas and fun meeting points.

Not only will these space bring both locals and visitors together, they will also showcase the edgiest local talent. In these areas we will define - and redefine - Lisbon’s cultural zeitgeist. Each will highlight the city’s colourful spirit while providing shared spaces to connect with others and create unforgettable experiences.

Idea: An original geo-location event to address music content in Lisbon by Super Bock.
A Venue Open for 3 months.

Music Town “Behind The Sounds” is set to be more than just an exhibition. Each week, several events will be offered to provide a subjective overview of the Lisbon music scene.

Labels, artist collectives, agencies, media, venues: the structures highlighted are somewhat all of them at once.

They all share the common goal of producing or coaxing out of hiding content that they then editorialize and disseminate in various forms – albums, blogs, apps, publications, objects, editions, performances, parties... Equally at home on the web as they are in music venues and clubs, these versatile structures bring together musicians, video artists, graphic artists, artistic directors, producers, content developers, and more.
