Acts of violence and relentless attacks on liberty seem to be increasing. With lone attacks on the rise and organised cells still recruiting, the spread of terrorism is unlikely to yield in the near future. Europe has become a primary target, with attacks unfolding in France, Germany, and England, with Manchester demonstrating that even the most innocent will not be exempted from such violence.

In the face of chaos, confusion, and despair, humanity has a way of shining through. Research into community response and logistical complications that emerge from these tragedies have been the primary motivation for this project. Since the war on terrorism was announced in the wake of September 11, 2001, to the most recent attacks on London Bridge in England, all attacks share an underlying logistical problem of accommodating those who are stranded or displaced. The focus of the emergency services are the victims and the perpetrators, but there are usually hundreds of people who are unable to make it home.

Many of the cities that have been targeted by terrorism rely heavily on public transport. Many of the attacks take place in popular entertainment areas where there is a higher opportunity to cause casualties. Once an attack takes place and public services are inaccessible, many people become stranded. Many people are willing to help, but short of grabbing people from the side of the street, there is no direct or effective way to do so.

Current Facebook Safety Check-In

Stay Safe is an extension of Facebook’s current safety check in, that allows people in an affected area to offer refuge to those who are unable to get home. The Facebook extension is a simple and effective way for those affected by the attack to locate safe temporary accommodation so they can stay safe until returning home. Stay Safe confirms the house location with the host and then locates the closest people requiring refuge. The host is then sent the estimated arrival time, profile image and name of their guest to ensure the host knows it is safe to let them in. The person who is stranded receives the same information, but also receives directions to the location.

Proposed Stay Safe Extension
This Facebook feature aims to reduce the number of people stranded during crisis situations and hopes to reduce the number of potential casualties that could occur if people remain on the streets in the surrounding areas. Although this project was designed with acts of terror and violence in mind, it would be equally effective in providing shelter during natural disasters.
