The Koi GirL

An independent illustration series by Deborah Lee

This whimsical series explores a brief, self-interpretative narrative through multiple compositions and perspectives. In terms of visuals, I experimented with line-work, brushes, and texture––mimicking those that would normally be found on work found on watercolor and analog drawing. Pursuing illustration in my free time, I experimented with different compositions in order to hint at a story through literally multiple perspectives.

The visual design of the koi was informed by an amalgam of references and my own wrist movement.
Initial Sketches
In the beginning, I was sketching thumbnails, going through ideas without thinking about constraints or difficulty of execution. Again, I was going for a strange, whimsical, and sophisticated mood. Additionally, the intent was to have the viewer self-interpret the narrative, as I chose to go with an obscure theme.
