UNWRAPPING MUMMY PARTIES // ISTD 2017
The brief required us to design a typographic work that explores the subject of "fads". We had to investigate the widest interpretation of the theme from historical, cultural and global perspectives. We also had to consider the tenor of the communication according to our chosen fad.
The fad that I chose to present was the Victorian unwrapping mummy parties that occurred within the 20th century. Egyptomania was a craze that swept over Europe and was the catalyst to the Victorians’ obsession with mummies. I wanted to inform people about the unethical nature of the fad by showing the amount of damage caused to the mummies through the use of broken, disrespected grids and typography. My publication is made up of three separate booklets; the first two follow the grid and respect the type, however the third booklet, talking about the unwrapping, disrespects the grid and distorts the typography to show the extent of damage caused due to the fad.
This project was awarded a pass from the International Society of Typographic Designers 2017 assessment.
